General Odwaa Survives a Suicide Attack
Somalia army chief, General Odwaa Yusuf survived a suicide attack after an explosion targeted his convoy happened as he was passing near the main military hospital.
The massive attack occurred in Hodan district in Mogadishu on Monday 13th.
General Odwaa who survived the explosion had just left the ministry of defence, and the massive blast followed a minute later sparking heavy gunfire. Police reported one person died in the explosion and few others injured. The army chief, however, escaped unhurt after the convoy he was travelling in got infiltrated by a vehicle loaded with bombs.
Ishmael Omar, a government spokesman, said the suicide bomber in the car tried to breach the convoy of Somali army chief General Odwaa near Tarabunika junction and ignored several warnings by the security escort forcing the security team to fire at it and it blew up.
Witnesses confirmed black smoke in the sky which was followed by the sound of huge gunfire and ambulances which were rushing to the scene of the explosion.
Investigations are still being done as there is no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. We have however had reports of such attacks in the past by the Al-Shabaab militants group. The offence has occurred just a week after Al-Shabaab militants opposite Mogadishu Port denoted a car bomb.
General Odawaa has always been in the fight against Al-Shabaab. He has long been praised for the role he played as a young military commander and when he led a battle against Al-Shabaab. He was the youngest officer to be appointed the General, and he has always received all his ranks because of fighting Al-Shabaab.
This clearly shows that the militant group would, at any given a chance want to eliminate him. Rageh has always prioritised building the army and implementing ways of fighting Al-Shabaab. He has been facing challenges as the Somali army fighting the militants.
